YAS25 Congress: Young Algae Scientists Explore New Horizons in Almería

From June 3rd to 6th, the city of Almería hosted Young Algaeneers Symposium 2025 (YAS25), a key event for young researchers in the field of algae, organized under the umbrella of the European Algae Biomass Association (EABA). The congress brought together dozens of participants from various countries who shared knowledge, experiences, and projects related to microalgae and seaweed biotechnology.

In addition to scientific sessions and presentations, the program featured three thematic workshops that generated great interest among attendees:

  • «Seaweed Identification» Workshop: A hands-on session on seaweed taxonomy and identification techniques, essential for proper classification and industrial valorization.

  • «Algae Cosmetics – Application and Bioeconomy» Workshop: An engaging overview of the emerging role of algae in the cosmetics sector, focusing on active ingredients, market trends, and sustainable business models.

  • «Cooking Green: Exploring Microalgae in Everyday Foods» Workshop: A creative cooking demo showcasing how microalgae can be incorporated into daily meals to promote a healthy and sustainable diet.

The congress also included technical visits to key biotech and research centers in the Almería region:

  • Aqualia El Toyo, where innovative technologies for water treatment and biomass valorization were presented.

  • Biorizon Biotech, a leading company in the development of biofertilizers and microalgae-based products.

  • IFAPA (La Cañada), where ongoing research in aquaculture, microalgae cultivation, and agri-food applications was introduced.

YAS25 was a unique opportunity to foster networking, idea exchange, and synergies between young scientists and industry stakeholders. The organizing committee sincerely thanks all participants, speakers, and collaborating entities for contributing to the success of this edition.

See you at the next YAS event!
